Organic

What exactly are ‘organic foods’?

The term 'organic food' is usually taken to mean a food that has been produced without artificial fertilisers and has not been subject to treatment with synthetic pesticides or growth promoters of any type, including hormones and antibiotics.

In addition, organic foods are manufactured using organic farming methods as opposed to conventional methods, protecting the environment and working with existing ecosystems, for example, conserving water, soil and energy, using renewable resources and natural farming cycles.

Reasons to buy organic:

While organic foods cost more than conventional foods, some people wish to buy organic foods to reduce their intake of pesticides, antibiotics or other chemical residues in food.

Most consumers appreciate that organic foods promote a healthier and more sustainable use of the environment and more humane treatment of animals.

Furthermore, there is a growing belief that organic foods taste better than conventional foods.

Most consumers appreciate that organic foods promote a healthier and more sustainable use of the environment and more humane treatment of animals.

Labelling:

Foods labelled with organic certification logos are foods that were grown, harvested, packaged, stored and transported without the use of synthetic chemicals, irradiation or fumigants.

In Australia and overseas, standards exist for farmers, manufacturers and wholesalers that must be adhered to in order for their products to be certified organic and stamped with the certifier’s logo. Lengthy checks and procedures take place to ensure every process of the supply chain from farming to manufacturing to distribution is free from chemicals.

Coeliac

What is Coeliac disease?

Coeliac disease is a permanent intestinal intolerance to dietary gluten.

People with coeliac disease experience an allergic reaction when they consume products that contain gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, oats etc).

When gluten is consumed, the lining of the small bowel is damaged, reducing the surface area of the finger-like projections of the bowel, called Villi.

Villi are responsible for the absorption of nutrients and minerals from food. The reduced surface area of Villi depletes the level of absorption of nutrients and minerals causing deficiencies in vitamins, minerals and sometimes calcium, protein, carbohydrates and fats.

When gluten is absent from the diet of the sufferer, the abnormalities of the bowel lining is reversed, resolving the problem of nutrient and mineral deficiencies. As a result, coeliac sufferers refrain from eating foods that contain gluten.

Without compromising on quality and taste, Artisse Organic has introduced products which provide gluten free alternatives.

Diabetes

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where the body is unable to automatically regulate blood glucose levels in the body and occurs when there is too much glucose (sugar) in the blood.

How does it work?

Glucose is a type of sugar that is required by the body for energy. Glucose is obtained from foods containing carbohydrates.

To generate energy, glucose needs to freely move from the blood stream into the body tissues such as the brain cells and heart cells. A hormone made by the pancreas called Insulin is responsible for this job.

In Diabetes, the pancreas either cannot make insulin (Type 1 diabetes) or the insulin it does make is not enough and cannot work properly (Type 2 diabetes). As a result, glucose channels are closed as insulin is absent, resulting in glucose build up in the blood.

Glucose build up in the blood leads to high blood glucose levels, causing the problems associated with diabetes.

Artisse Organic is committed to providing glucose free alternatives to sufferers of diabetes without compromising on quality or taste.
